East Hull expanded greatly after World War One, a new parish of the Sacred Heart and a chapel-of-ease were built. There were an estimated 2,000 Catholics in the new parish.

The church was built in 1926-27. The original architect was Thomas Rodgers of Darlington, with alterations by John Houghton.
